A blog first - 7D video - Great Spotted Woodpecker

So here is a blogging first for us, and my first attept at using the video function on the 7D.

This lovely female Great Spotted Woodpecker likes our garden, and in particluar the fat/suet/seeed/nut mix that I have put in the crevices on my Silver Birch feeding tree.

Not a brilliant video - bit shaky, on board mike so I set the focus, and switched the gyros off on the 500 in order to silnce that.

I need to spend some time finding out about video editing software and techniques. This is like starting all over from ten years ago with Photoshop Elements!! The file is too large and wont be any good trying to watch from your Android phones (or iPhones if you havent caught up with the better smart phones yet) - so I need to work out the best save format. Any ideas or tips would be welcome as comments.

Video tests

ALL cameras now coming out have HD video in form or another, Many people bemoan the addition of video on their cameras and there are many people saying 'if the new camera comes out with video i wont buy it' well do that and sooner or later you will have to give up photography as they will ALL have it, Its not something i am looking for-my new D3s has it and i havent even found out how to turn it on!! People were like this when liveview was announced, Now i love liveview and think its a great feature,All i can say is you don't have to use a feature if you don't want, I don't think many people realise how having HD video in a still camera is important to the movie industry,Sure mum and dad can take some video footage of the kids playing football but it goes deeper than that, Take a look at this video (if you have 30 mins to spare) listen to what people in 'the' industry are saying about modern Dslrs and how blown away they are by them and their capabilities, I found it very enlightening

David Courtenay, a self taught wildlife and nature photographer, has been capturing images for over 30 years. He has had a passion for wildlife since early childhood and remembers being glued to the television whenever Survival, Wildlife on One and other natural history documentaries were shown. In the 2006 he swapped his established career for the life of a wildlife photographer, such a move demands a measure of uncompromising passion and commitment.

David has travelled extensively throughout Europe as well as spending more than 7 months in India working with local guides and trackers in search of Bengal Tiger, Asian One horned Rhino and Asian Elephant. He has also photographed Wildlife in Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra, Africa, Canada and America. Working closely with Conservation companies he tries to raise funds to help Wildlife that has been put on the endangered list by poaching and habitation loss

Martin Dyer has had a passion for avian wildlife since childhood, particularly raptors. Photography was also another keen interest and it was with the specific availability and control of the whole process that digital offers that Martin was then able to combine the two in 2003. Based in the UK, Martin is a regular visitor to Scotland, specifically the Isle of Mull to watch the Eagles resident there. Other trips to Europe and around the UK are usually part of Martin’s agenda in a typical year.

However, as a firm believer on making the most of the local patch, Martin has spent a lot of time and hard work creating a wildlife garden which is reaping the rewards with many new species and varieties of wildlife. A keen member of a number of wildlife photographic groups, Martin is keen to expand his portfolio into other areas of wildlife, and has already established a wide portfolio of images of fungi.
